A few years ago the Churchill Island farm staff had some campfire activities during one lot of school holidays. Each morning they'd light the campfire in the fenced off paddock near the shearing shed and boil some billy tea and cook up a stew in a camp oven in the coals or cook up some chops on an improvised hot plate over the fire . We can't go to Churchill Island at present, but some of us can view it from a distance. Here it is from Rhyll beach, with a moored boat and some very "chilled" seagulls in the foreground. Many of you probably know and love the Clydesdale sculpture near the Churchill Island Visitor Centre. This horse has seen many thousands of children hop on to have a 'ride' and their photos taken. FOCIS volunteer and newsletter editor Jeff Cole oils the sculpture with special oil once a year, and it is due for an oiling now before the weather gets too cold. It may just have to wait til Spring! The sculpture was made with a chainsaw from a fallen Churchill Island cypress by Dean "Dancing Bear" Smith during a Working Horse Festival years ago.
