Churchill Island Friends Society Inc.

Our Churchill Island themed Poetry/Super-Short Story event last Saturday delighted our small, enthusiastic audience. Having several families and staff from the Phillip Island Village School attend and three of the students present their own Churchill Island written creations made the event very special. FOCIS thanks them for making the effort and sharing their little poems and short stories with us.

Pictured are, from the Phillip Island Village School, Olive, who read a short story about cranky old George the Churchill Island cockatoo, then Poppy and Elka who read a poem in unison, and finished with a funny little dialogue skit.

John reads the soulful "Lt Grant's Lament", complete with soulful shanty chorus.

Our president Mike read "Too-ri-dun", designed to scare children with tails of the Western Port bunyip.

Secretary Christine read several short pieces, and concluded the event with a mother's day tribute - a performed reading of how her great grandmother Marion Pickersgill was born on Churchill Island.

FOCIS member Kate read her version of the Owl and the Pussycat went to sea...

FOCIS had audio engineer Simon Eddy (seen here deep in concentration), record the individual readers. Christine will use the recordings to create a Power Point video for our Youtube channel. Watch this space...

Churchill Island Friends Society Inc.

Saturday May 9 is our next FOCIS GM at 3 p.m., followed by a poetry and short story event at 3.30 pm. However, the forecast is for a chilly day, so we are re-locating from Churchill Island shearing shed to:

Gurborra bik bik building, adjacent to the Visitor Centre at the Koala Conservation Reserve 1810 Phillip Island Rd, Rhyll VIC 3923. (opposite Amaze n Things). This is the same place we had our February GM in.

It will be nice and warm inside there, and a varied poetry and short story program is guaranteed. Churchill Island Friends Society Inc. is attending an event.

Do you love Churchill Island? Do you enjoy penning poems, or the challenge of 50 - 100 word short stories? Why not combine your love of the island and your writing ability to come along and present at our Churchill Island poetry/short story event, next Saturday 9 May, starting 3.30 pm in the Churchill Island shearing shed?

We already have some keen members and some local school children working on pieces as we speak. Beginner writer, experienced writer, all points in between welcome! Anything about Churchill Island, and aimed at a general audience, is acceptable. Any genre, type of poem, theme or topic - it just needs to be in some way about Churchill Island.

If you have a poem or super-short story, but don't want to read ityourself, you can have a friend read, or FOCIS can provide a reader for you. Performance poets also welcome!

The poetry event is free, but you will need to pay the usual entry to Churchill Island. FOCIS members enter CI for free. BYO nibbles and drink, or purchase at the CI cafe before 4 pm. The event will finish approx 4.30 pm. Seating is tiered bench seating in the shearing shed, so BYO cushion if you need a soft seat. Need a chair with arms? Seating in the front row? Let us know.

Churchill Island Friends Society Inc.

Friends of Churchill Island Society Inc FOCIS sends huge congratulations to the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society for winning the Volunteer Run Museum Project state award at Wednesday's AMAGA Vic (Australian Museum and Galleries Association, Victoria branch). Wonthaggi is the large regional town for Bass Coast, the shire in which Churchill Island is situated. The Wonthaggi society and FOCIS have both been involved in the Bass Coast heritage group over the years, and FOCIS secretary Christine Grayden suggested to Wonthaggi that they nominate their talks series for the award.
