The Cape Barren Geese are back in the paddocks beside the drive from the bridge to the Visitor Centre on Churchill Island, after an absence of some months. The Churchill Island Visitor Centre garden has quite a few species of indigenous plants growing. Pictured here are some in flower there now: a purple Trigger plant, and a yellow Everlasting daisy. Trigger plants seem to be carnivorous as they capture and absorb nutrients from prey that get stuck in a glutenous substance under the flowers. They are found in the wild in various parts of Phillip Island, including Pyramid Rock. There is a group of them in our garden, and they make a great feature. Peter the sculptor has finished the Eastern Barred Bandicoot sand sculpture in the garden Churchill Island's Visitor Centre. The "Wild" in front of the EBB is promotion for the Wild Sand Sculpture Exhibition coming to the Penguin Parade over summer. FOCIS is looking forward to it! Photo shows the completed sculpture. ... Peter the sand sculptor (shown) is currently in the Churchill Island Visitor Centre front garden (near the car park) preparing to start a sand sculpture of an Eastern Barred Bandicoot, complete with stripes. Here he is yesterday with the formwork in place and filling it with sand. The photo from today shows the block of sand with forms removed, ready to start sculpting into. The sand has a high clay content so that it is especially 'fatty' and will hold together well. Once completed, photos with the EBB from the path side of the rope will be welcome, but the sculpture is definitely not made for climbing on! We'll show you the completed sculpture soon. ...
