What a wonderful treat it was for some FOCIS members and Churchill Island curator Andrea to meet Jack and Juneen Schulz recently. Jack is one of Carroll and Amy Schulz's two sons. He and Juneen had come to present 2 volumes which Carroll (no doubt with Amy's help) compiled of memories, information and images of their lives on Phillip and Churchill Islands. Here Jack and Juneen are seen holding a copy of the first folder "part one", outside Amess House. Andrea writes:

'On the first page Carroll writes in his opening sentence:

"No man is an island..." This record is a "Word & Picture" story of our life on the Islands for nearly twenty years.

Carroll described it as the "happiest days of our working lives."

• Part one "Caretakers and Stewards of the Land" - CI and PI 1978-1993, 1999-2001
• Part two "Caretakers and Stewards of the Land" - With Her Apprentices "Youth and Experience" C.S and A.W.S'

Knowing how thorough a record-keeper Carroll was, and how devoted both he and Amy were to Churchill Island from 1978 onwards until the end of their long lives, the two volumes are a most wonderful gift for the Churchill Island archives. In fact, they are in addition to the substantial archive Carroll had already presented to FOCIS earlier, including many captioned photographs of CI activities from the late 1970s until 2000 and much detailed information. Those records were invaluable for the revision of the book "Churchill Island History and Her Story" last year.

Churchill Island and the seas surrounding it have many moods. This morning Friends of Churchill Island Society volunteer Jeff stopped on his way up to the historic precinct to take this photograph through the cold mist. The water is flat calm and crystal-clear, the small mangroves reflect perfectly on the calm water, and the Moonah coast of the western side of Churchill Island looms through the mist in the distance. Enchanting! Great photo!!

Winter weather has descended in early at the moment on Churchill Island, but more sunshine is on the way. Meanwhile, one of the cold FOCIS volunteers took this photo yesterday of a very busy mum with 13 chicks, all of them having a great scratch for bugs in the compost. Lots of the straw bedding from the chook house, guinea pigs, rabbit, miniature goats night house, etc, is added to the compost, and from this photo it's clearly a great source of tucker for this hungry brood. Also pictured is a drawing by Amanda Proctor from the third, recently published and fully revised edition of Patricia Baird's "Churchill Island History and Her Story". The book has been well received and is selling well. It is available via our Friends of Churchill Island Society Inc website: focis.org.au , through the Turn the Page books store in Thompson Avenue Cowes, and through the retail section in the visitors' Centre at Churchill Island. Amanda's drawing shows Sister Margaret Campbell feeding her chooks on Churchill Island. Sister Campbell was associated with Churchill Island from the late 1930s until 1964 as Ted Jenkins' nurse, and then inherited Churchill Island where she lived until auctioning the island in the early 1970s. Our society has applied successfully for many, many grants over the years, and has a long history of delivering successful projects funded by grants. Late last year the federal government announced $3m for the CHART grants - Cultural Heritage Arts Regional Tourism grants. That was great news, but the grants had a project completion date of end of June this year. Some projects are possible within 7 months, but many are not. FOCIS considered a number of options, and when the CHART grants were extended to include equipment we decided to apply for a new data projector for our public meetings, training, etc, and for a digitising studio to assist curator Andrea in correctly photographing objects already catalogued and yet to be cataloged. This was for a suitable digital camera, a portable light box, and a good quality tripod to ensure the clearest of images. It is a difficult environment in which to be applying for grants for such equipment, which is currently still available. But given the shortages brought about by the Covid situation in China, and the drought in Taiwan, where so many of our computer chips are manufactured in a process which uses a great deal of water for cleaning the chips at each stage of manufacture. we may encounter supply issues. We are feeling quietly confident we will be successful in securing the grant funding, and can only hope the equipment will still be available by then - probably mid-June. Fingers crossed! Images from selling websites show the digitising project equipment we are hoping to get if successful. This will make a HUGE difference to properly photographing CI's amazing collection objects to include on our online cataloguing program: Victorian Collections. ... See MoreSee Less

Just a reminder that tomorrow Friday 29 April, 10 - 11 a.m., Churchill Island will again be participating in the National Trust annual Heritage Festival, on the theme of "Curiosity". FOCIS volunteer Jeff Cole and his volunteer helpers Tim and Brian will be available to talk about the old tipping dray rebuild and all other things machinery. They have so much experience behind them, so drop in with a list of questions - one or more of them is almost certain to be able to help you out!
