Peter the sand sculptor (shown) is currently in the Churchill Island Visitor Centre front garden (near the car park) preparing to start a sand sculpture of an Eastern Barred Bandicoot, complete with stripes. Here he is yesterday with the formwork in place and filling it with sand. The photo from today shows the block of sand with forms removed, ready to start sculpting into. The sand has a high clay content so that it is especially 'fatty' and will hold together well. Once completed, photos with the EBB from the path side of the rope will be welcome, but the sculpture is definitely not made for climbing on! We'll show you the completed sculpture soon. ... Thanks to FOCIS member John Eddy, who gave our members attending our General Meeting last Saturday an excellent talk on the history and environment of Phillip Island's Scenic Estate Reserve. Despite the cold, wet day, 11 members turned out for the informative meeting and happy gathering after it. Members are always welcome at our convivial quarterly meetings and we always have great speakers. Non-members also welcome. It might have been blustery and showery and the thermometer never got over 12 degrees, but that didn't stop the FOCIS stalwarts coming out to the FOCIS working bee for 8 a.m. today. Thanks to John for vacuuming all carpets in Amess House, Terry and Robyn for cleaning out the scullery, Coolgardie safe and Rogers Cottage dormitory, and Christine for sweeping through the house, dusting, and cleaning the Volunteers' kitchen. Coming up next Saturday November 9: FOCIS General Meeting. Starts 1.30 p.m. at the function room, Churchill Island Visitor Centre. Our speaker will be Friends of Scenic Estate Reserve (FOSER) co-ordinator John Eddy who is extremely knowledgeable about the botany of this plant-rich reserve which is diagonally opposite Churchill Island's south western coast and also shares borders with the Churchill Island Marine National Park. The SER which is opposite Forrest Caves and has wonderful walking trails, has over 100 species of indigenous land plants (not including mosses and lichens, of which there are also many species) and has a most fascinating history. In fact, it's amazing that anything has survived there! All welcome. No need to RSVP, just turn up!
