What with coronavirus lockdown and wild weather causing widespread blackouts it’s really hard for us all to keep up with what’s open when! But Churchill Island is currently open daily for regional Victorians and beyond and we are all really looking forward to having our Melbourne visitors back once their lockdown is over – hopefully soon! Meanwhile here is a black and white photo of the sculpture at the visitor centre by local photographer Lisa. The clay sculpture was made by local artist Camille Monet about the time the centre was opened around 2000. It depicts a local Aboriginal myth where star- crossed lovers incur the wrath of the spirits. The young woman is turned into a Moonah tree leaning down into the sea to her young man who has been turned into a whirlpool beneath her. Did you know that our society - Friends of Churchill Island Society Inc - has been around and helping on Churchill Island in lots of ways for over 40 years?! That's a long time for a Friends group. We are still doing lots of good volunteer work on and for Churchill Island in conjunction with the managers Phillip Island Nature Parks, to keep it a magic place. But we can't do that without support from the public. As we reach the end of Volunteers Week, it's important to acknowledge the big variety of vols from all walks of life and all ages who have given their time, money and energy to CI over many years. Among them were hundreds of Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies and their dedicated leaders who gave much needed help especially in the first 20 years of government ownership. Here are some photos from the CI collection: A group of Leaders relaxing around a CI picnic table chatting, while some of their charges chat in the background; A senior Guide and Scout sharing a pleasant moment together on CI - is he showing off his muscles!; the then Governor General Sir Ninian Stephen visiting CI during 1988 for the Bicentennial, walking with CI manager Carroll Schulz, followed by a large contingent of happy cubs! Phillip Island Nature Parks, the managers of Churchill Island, have a dedicated Churchill Island FB page now! You can see lots of beaut images of the island's animals and staff at work, and info about any forthcoming events on CI. And a few featured volunteers: here's FOCIS volunteer Jeff Cole, recently featured on the CI FB page, set up in Amess Barn where he and other volunteers will be rebuilding the old tipping dray.
