Churchill Island Friends Society Inc.

Despite not being able to go on our Walk with gardener Alice around the Churchill Island garden yesterday, we still had a FOCIS gathering. We met with some members of the Phillip Island and San Remo garden club in the well-appointed Newhaven Information Centre meeting room for our business meeting, followed by a most interesting talk by FOCIS secretary Christine Grayden on the history of gardening on Churchill Island, 1802-present. Christine has shared her Power Point slides with us here. She may have time to record the commentary and create a video for our YouTube channel some time as well. We hope you enjoy the slides in the meantime.

Another highlight of the meeting was our president Mike Cleeland's reading of his brilliant poem "I am the very model of the modern paleontologist". A combination of Tom Lehrer, W S Gilbert and his own inimitable style, we don't think he could have fitted a single other paleontology/geology term in there! Churchill Island Friends Society Inc.

FOCIS GM today! 1.30 pm at the Newhaven Information Centre meeting room. Our speaker, Christine Grayden, was curator on Churchill Island for 8 years, and is a well-known local historian. Her talk "A Brief History of Gardening on Churchill Island" will include lots of images and information on the various 'eras', starting with the first colonial garden planted by Grant in 1802, through to the current management of this now-publicly owned island. Christine will also show us photos of gardening trends evident that have led to the garden we have today: herb gardens; fruit and vegies; lawns and broad vistas; a surprise around every garden corner; attempts to reintroduce heritage plants; native plant gardens. She will even touch on an unexpected love story. All welcome - it's warm in the Newhaven Information Centre meeting room!

Churchill Island Friends Society Inc.

Our November 8 general meeting is fast approaching. The meeting will be held starting 1.30 p.m. in the Churchill Island shearing shed (no function room any more), where the seating is on wooden form seats. (You may like to BYO cushion). As a special treat our president Mike Cleeland will perform his poem “..the very model of the modern paleontologist”. Some of you may know that Mike is an avid paleontologist with a dinosaur he discovered named after him - Koolasuchus cleelandi – which is Victoria’s fossil emblem. Mike has written many poems, with several books published. He’s also performed in several G&S productions. This poem is a combination of his skills!
If the weather is fine we will meet at 12.45 at the front verandah of Amess House near the big Norfolk Island Pine, where Churchill Island gardener Alice Ward (pictured at left talking about the old Olive Tree with Peter, past FOCIS president David Maunders and Dr Greg Moore), will take us on a half hour guided walk of the garden. A few members of the San Remo Phillip Island garden club will join us to help with some general plant enquiries as we walk.
Note: There are still some spots vacant for the walk, so if you wish to attend the walk, please let our secretary Christine know so that we can let Alice know how many people she will be guiding through the garden. Email Christine on secretary@focis.org.au
If the weather is unsuitable for a walk, Christine will present a Power Point talk in the shearing shed from 1 p.m., giving a history of the garden. As curator on Churchill Island from 2010-2018 she learnt a lot about the subject, and has photographic records to share.
